An “Older Dog” Speaks

Tips for Attending an Education Conference like NECC

I have attended many major conferences as both an educator and as a technology company representative over the years, and participated by doing workshops, presentations, panel discussions, demonstrations and being an energized “booth bunny” and corporate spy. It is unusual to engage with attendees who seem well prepared for these events. For newbies, the major conferences can be overwhelming. NECC is an example of a place where an attendee can get desperately lost in the noise.  You can return home disappointed and having missed some extraordinary opportunities to engage peers, meet innovators and pioneers, learn from experienced education solution providers. There is often an opportunity to witness new trends that may make all the difference in transforming the education environments in your blended learning spaces.

Plan Ahead

  • Study the agenda/schedule/exhibitors, then make & stick to a plan
  • Evaluate all of the presentations, workshops… and attend those that fit your plan
  • Prepare best methods to capture information &ways to connect with key folkBring personal business cards but give them out sparingly + also bring a notepad/PDA/laptop
  • Set-up side meetings, (meals, coffees, demos…) ahead of time with peers, vendors etc. Map-out a networking strategy of both educators & solution providers (post presentations, receptions, small groups…)
  • Don’t just be a causal pedestrian and tchotchke seeker, remember why you are there, plus this could be career elevating
  • Have fun but manage and prioritize your time carefully, because time will go quickly Execute on your follow-up activities, immediately! e-mails, notes, trip report, phone calls, appointments…

Lightning Bolt

There is tremendous value at these conferences but you have to find it. Many top people in your field are in one place at one time. This provides an exceptional opportunity to optimize your time and travel dollars for returns that may pay dividends to you and your students for years to come. The next event you attend may be the lightning bolt that changes your thinking and in turn becomes the beginning of a major contribution to your school and beyond. Happy trails.

  1. Thanks for the great ideas in this post! I’m glad to see that I’m doing several things right. I hadn’t thought about putting an interactive question in a post – nice tip. I’m pretty new at blogging and your site helped encourage me to get into some group writing contests, projects and carnivals – which I have thoroughly enjoyed! I can always count on your blog for some great ideas for taking things up a notch. It will be fun to think of some ideas for non-family related universal post topics. Thanks for such an informative post!
